An Invitation From Mr. Hearst

an invitation from mr hearst1

I just got back from a quick drive down to San Diego and because I have come to think of the 300 mile I5 slog from Stockton to the Grapevine as mind-numbing (literally, other than the Harris Ranch near the middle for a nice steak) – there is literally nothing. I’m trying to decide which is more boring – this or driving across the Texas panhandle on I40. At least there you have Amarillo and The Big Texan (if you can eat their monster 72 oz steak it’s free! Pepto-Bismol included!). Years ago, I used to think of the 500 mile drive to San Diego as long but certainly doable; these days I like to break it up.

Particularly with LA traffic. Used to be you could time it to be there outside of rush hour, but these days it just seems like it is bad – and worse. A  couple of years ago, I hit Los Angeles area at about 1600 and it took me literally 4-5 hours to traverse the LA – and Orange County – area. First thing in San Diego I had late at night was a martini at Anthony’s on the waterfront. Now closed.

Anyway point is, these days I like to take the roads less traveled. Make the journey an adventure too.

Funny and Thought Provoking

I was reading This Week magazine today (actually more of a pamphlet). It is a wonderful periodical published, I believe, by the people who publish the UK Economist Magazine. It has a summary of issues of the week, with excerpts on all sides of that issue by different periodicals.

Anyway, they have a weekly column entitled “Wit and Wisdom”, with quotes from people today to 100s of years ago. Among this week’s quotes:

These days, I am rather jaded when it comes to driving to the cineplex to see a movie. I don’t really need some screenwriter’s social message or a recycled comic book hero.

There are a couple of exceptions – if it is made by Ron Howard, or has Clint Eastwood on either side of the camera, it automatically passes my filter test. Tom Hanks in any movie usually guarantees a decent movie.

This movie, directed by Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks took a subject that just about everyone not living in a cave the last 10 years is familiar – and made it into a movie both thoroughly entertaining and informative. In fact at the end the audience in the nearly packed theater applauded.

An Interesting Series

My TV viewing habits have shifted over the last year from mainly network TV (There were 5 of us left in the country) to Internet streaming from Netflix. Never could justify out here paying $100+/month to get “cable” TV. Seems that you get 100 channels you don’t want to get 3-5 that you do want.

Anyway on Netflix is an 8 part series entitled “American Genius” – about industry movers and shakers who really affected society.  The first episode dealt with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, while the 2nd episode highlighted 2 aviation pioneers, the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtis. That episode was a bit of a surprise for me, having put the Wright Brothers into the near Deity platform for, you know, inventing the airplane.

Trusting The Public

NewVessel

H/T to one of the Lexicans who posted this to the F/B page.

“It is a cautionary tale of well meaning, engagement-seeking bureaucracy and a cheeky public and it could see a very expensive new research ship given the most ridiculous name ever.”

As a few told me, “Can you imagine being a crew member calling the harbormaster with your ship’s name?”

Personally, I favor the RRS It’s bloody cold here.

Reminds me of this post of Lex’s on callsigns.

Listen to Lincoln on Thanksgiving President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation remains meaningful in 2015.

This was in my Facebook ticker this morning. I thought it was a very good article.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN’S THANKSGIVING DAY PROCLAMATION, OCTOBER 3, 1863.

“1863. The nation is divided by a bloody civil war pitting father against son and brother against brother. Few people had much for which to be thankful. In the midst of all this, President Abraham Lincoln took the extraordinary step of declaring a national day of Thanksgiving, an annual holiday to observe the blessing the Almighty had seen fit to bestow upon a fractured people.

It was not the first time a call for such a celebration had been issued. The pilgrims who populated the Massachusetts Bay Colony undertook the first of such events after a particularly harsh winter had brought with it nearly unbearable hardships that threatened the survival of all. When Lincoln put pen to paper, he created a tradition honored up to this day.”

The rest is at the link below……………..

Wishes for a Blessed Thanksgiving to all from Missus ORPO and I.
