Why the Spitfire’s place in history should be challenged

Hush-Kit

In his controversial article ‘Dismantling the Spitfire myth’ Matthew Willis asserted that the Spitfire’s role in British history is hugely over-stated. Jon Lake countered by defending its reputation in ‘Spitfire’s Revenge’. Now in the third part of a fascinating debate, Willis hits back.

spitfire-ch_001447Challenging the Spitfire is, due to its iconic status, always going to be a difficult thing to do. Nevertheless, after reading Jon Lake’s response to my earlier piece, I continue to assert that the Spitfire’s place in the history of World War II should be challenged.

If I might first answer the charge of ‘revisionist nonsense‘. On the second point (of it being nonsense), it’s not for me to say. On the first, though the word revisionism seems to have become a pejorative term of late, it properly stands for a proper historical re-examination of existing orthodoxy and accepted ideas. If the ideas…

New Flavour!

I think the Good Captain would like this one……………………………..just a guess

Among The Joshua Trees

As I posted earlier, here it is!

This was procured at the Stater Bros Market in Ridgecrest on Wednesday when taking The Missus to DMV to renew her driver’s license. We now make it a day with a stop at Wally World, Stater Bros and the KFC before heading back to Casa de Sharon y Glenn in beautiful California City.

This Thunderstruck is quite hoppy with a clean finish. I got it on the condition that I let Missus ORPO have the bottle. It is painted and not a paper or one of those clear labels. The stencil treatment is what makes Stone products a bit pricey. I do love what comes out of that awesome brewery in Escondido!

Listen to Lincoln on Thanksgiving President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation remains meaningful in 2015.

This was in my Facebook ticker this morning. I thought it was a very good article.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN’S THANKSGIVING DAY PROCLAMATION, OCTOBER 3, 1863.

“1863. The nation is divided by a bloody civil war pitting father against son and brother against brother. Few people had much for which to be thankful. In the midst of all this, President Abraham Lincoln took the extraordinary step of declaring a national day of Thanksgiving, an annual holiday to observe the blessing the Almighty had seen fit to bestow upon a fractured people.

It was not the first time a call for such a celebration had been issued. The pilgrims who populated the Massachusetts Bay Colony undertook the first of such events after a particularly harsh winter had brought with it nearly unbearable hardships that threatened the survival of all. When Lincoln put pen to paper, he created a tradition honored up to this day.”

The rest is at the link below……………..

Wishes for a Blessed Thanksgiving to all from Missus ORPO and I.

Life Event

I haven’t been here in awhile lately and I should not be that way. Today’s announcement is part of that journey of life. I finally had to call it being a Crew Chief in the 416 AMU.

Among The Joshua Trees

Life event/Milestone.

It’s official.
I am a Tool Room Attendant.
No more flight line or jets for me.
The foot issues enabled me to obtain a reasonable accomodation to get off the line.
For the record:
ACC on 83-1120, 80-3666, 80-0584 and 88-0445. DCC for a time on 88-0456.
It was a good run. Father Time finally let me know that it was time to do something else not as strenuous, as well did my doctor..
The main bragging point: Oldest Crew Chief on the Line at Red Flag 12-2 at the age of 57!

Mojave Desert Morning………………………………Sunrise

Another set of pics of the Desert that I live and work in.

Among The Joshua Trees

I left for work a bit earlier than usual this morning. I keep the Nikon in the Titan for opportunities…………………………..Today was excellent. I am no Pinch Paisley by any stretch but I have fun with my basic D3000.

The sun had just peeked over the Rand Mountains and I even got the purple that is a desert thing over the Rocket Lab on the mountain near Boron.

I love the desert. It has a certain quality of silence in the morning. I do enjoy the drive into the base in the morning on days like this. It is a very awesome place.

‘Best Painted Aircraft‘ at Tigermeet: Eurofighter Typhoon: theBrigade

Awesome looking Typhoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Among The Joshua Trees

This was in the Sunday Surfing today. This is one awesome looking Typhoon. They have the winner at this year’s Tiger Meet(Bucket List Item).

The stunning ‘Tiger Typhoon’ clinched the international award at the event in Schleswig, North Germany. In total over 60 aircraft from 12 different nations attended the Tigermeet which is a regular event aimed at encouraging nations to freely explore interoperability and joint operations in a informal and flexible environment.
The Typhoon Tiger is one of several Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft in the Luftwaffe’s 74th Tactical Fighter Wing, formerly known as JG 74. The Bavarian Tigers first formed in March 2013 following the restructuring of the Luftwaffe that year. The Fighter Wing is based at Neuburg and Lechfeld Air Base in Bavaria. The tiger tradition was handed over from former Fighter Bomber Wing 32 in Lechfeld to Fighter Wing 74.
Kommodore Frank Graefe, who heads the Fighter Wing…
