It’s coming up soon, one bookend to summer and the traditional day in which we stop as a nation and honor those soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have died in the service of their country over the course of the last 200-odd years.
But if that’s too traditional for you, presidential candidate John Edwards has some other ideas:
This Memorial Day weekend, we will all take responsibility for the country we love and the men and women who protect it. We will volunteer, we will pray, and we will speak out. Each of us has a responsibility to act, a duty to our troops and to each other. Support the troops. End the war.
It’s just that simple: Support the troops. End the war. I’m surprised that no one stumbled on to it earlier, but that’s genius for you.
He even offers you 10 specific ideas on how to support the troops and end the war. (Hint: Winning it and returning home victorious isn’t one of them. So don’t look for that one.)
Some of his ideas are quite good: Buy care packages. Greet a vet. Say thanks. Pray a little.
What could it hurt?
But others? Eh.
Get local, get active, and get outdoors. Walk the streets of your neighborhood. Get everyone you know to sign a petition to your local government body—for instance, your town or city council or neighborhood association—to pass a resolution requesting that Congress use its funding authority to support our troops and end the war. Bring the petition to the next meeting
Get vocal. Buy a bunch of poster-board and markers. At a picnic or with family and friends, make signs that say “SUPPORT THE TROOPS – END THE WAR.” Bring them to your local Memorial Day parade. Then take a digital photo of yourself and your family or friends holding up the poster and tell us about it. We’ll include it in a “Democracy Photo Album” on our site.
Jeff G.’s not so sure that effort is entirely sincere. After a brief history lesson which notes certain inconsistencies in the senator’s position over the years, he asks –
(H)ow craven and ego-driven does one have to be to sell out two entire countries for the remote opportunity he might pick off a few primary victories by pandering to the anti-war base and maybe secure himself a vice presidential nod?
Our morale for killing the enemy is high, but to a man everyone is thoroughly disgusted with the US and all of the stupid things that people are saying about the war. Even watching commercials on TV here makes you upset when you see just how frivolous it all is. You really have to come here to understand just how well things are going at least here in Anbar. AQIZ is getting rolled up left and right and our attacks right now are averaging less than 2 per week in the entire AO! The ones that they do pull off are incredibly weak and all I see on FNC [Blackfive: Fox News Channel] is spot reps of a vbied someplace in the country. I know there are hot areas, but I read all the intel reports and we are creaming these fools.
So. Better hurry up and support those guys right out of there before they do something foolish and, you know: Win it.
Because these guys? The deployed ones, in theater? They’re just not seeing the whole picture.
