A Tribute To The Fallen – Building a WW2 Memorial in Phoenix

Just got this YouTube video in the email – what a story.

The Navy actually still had an extra gun barrel of the USS Arizona (BB-39) in a warehouse in Virginia – and an extra barrel of the USS Missouri (BB-63). With a lot of effort and the donation of time and equipment of some Phoenix construction companies and heavy haulers, they are setting  up a memorial in Phoenix – bookends to the Pacific Theater of WW2.

  1. Neat stuff. I suspect this gun was one of those from turrets 3 & 4, which were salvaged from Arizona and used as coast defense batteries during WW II.

The impression I got was that it was brand new and just sitting in a warehouse in VA for who knows how long – either way it is pretty cool!

  2. Could be, I do know that we had extra 16″ barrels for the Iowas in stock–but not the entire gun (i.e. with breechblock) as the 14″ appears to have. Cool indeed!
