Aircraft Restoration: Vought (XF-8A) XF8U-1 Crusader

The Museum of Flight located in Everett, Washington is undertaking restoration of a Vought F-8 Crusader, known as the greatest fighter ever developed. However this isn’t just any F-8. The aircraft undergoing restoration is BuNo: 138899, was the first F-8 built served as the prototype for a production run totaling 1219 aircraft.

The Museum has a website dedicated to the restoration of this aircraft:

‘899’ made 509 flights during five years of flight testing, after which it was donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in 1960. After being stored at the Silver Hill, Maryland restoration facility for a number of years, and a few other intermediate stops, the airplane was moved to the Museum of Flight’s Restoration Center in Everett, Washington, where it is currently under restoration.

Its an interesting restoration and the restoration staff is doing a great job. I’m sure will have more on this in the future.

    The Museum of Flight has the best collection of WW1 and WW2 aircraft I have seen – anywhere – including the Smithsonian. And for their Concorde, ask them about the pilot’s hat stuck in the bulkhead.

    Just in case folks are confused The Museum of Flight’s main facility is located at Boeing Field just South of Downtown Seattle. If you visit you’ll find several very good micro-breweries in the Georgetown neighborhood immediately to the North of the airport.

    The restoration facility is at Paine Field, about 30 miles North of Seattle. Paine Field is also home to Boeing’s final assembly plant for 747, 767, 777 and 787 jets. Paul Allen has also funded a significant collection of warbirds at Paine.
