War Hero, Col. Bud Day Dies in Ft. Walton Beach

Sound Taps.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
 And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
 – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I had heard about Bud Day for years – but when I really put it together was when I read a book on the Misties – that group of Air Force volunteers who volunteered to draw fire – locating AA and missile batteries – for the F4s and F105s.

    What a story.

    What a man.

I believe he is the only POW to escape from the North back into South Vietnam.

And to make within a half mile of a Marine base….

As these men leave us, the earth somehow seems to get a little heavier.

Col. Day was one o’ my heroes… for a long, long time.

  4. 3 days later NBC decided to air the news of Col. Day’s death.
Always on top of things, they are.
