Again with the Stolen Valor?

Will these people never learn that you’re going to get caught when you tell these lies? A broken back is a pretty easy thing to verify, no?. I’ll never understand this. A few years ago a co-worker whose husband is an Army MP veteran of Iraq mistook me for a veteran ( I have no idea why) and I couldn’t correct her fast enough.

Poe claimed he suffered a broken back and a brain injury, which left him with a significant stutter.

“I had volunteered for a team to go out and clear buildings and help out with the wounded,” Poe said on the talent show.

“There was a guy who come up with a rocket-propelled grenade,” he said. “I saw it coming down, and by the time I turned and went to jump on top of my guys, I yelled ‘grenade’ and the blast had hit me.”

With the Internet I am amazed at how fast data can be brought up – correcting those who are lying. Heck my 86 year old mother wanted me to decorate the grave of my great uncle Peter Zouck, killed by a sniper in WW1 in Oct 1918. He is buried in Luxembourg.

I do a cursory lookup and in a second, find, for a fee, I can see his draft card and numerous other documents.

For a man killed in 1918.

So why do people think they can get away with it?

  2. Because they are deficient in their personalities that they have to make it up with lies. Richard Blumenthal did it to great personal success; so the model is out there that people can get away with it.
Personally I believe it is a mental illness that needs to be diagnosed and treated – treatment being to be shipped to wherever they falsely claim they were injured with just enough rations for a couple of days, plus no armor or defensive weapons.

Kris – I am still astounded when caught he said something like “I misspoke?”

For years, I had a neighbor who was a character. Enlisted in the Marines at 16, survived Tarawa, Saipan, and the Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

Anyway for years at his Marine Corps association meetings there was this man who claimed he was a retired Col – and one day they asked the Corps in DC to verify his record.

it was all a fiction and when confronted the man disappeared.

I guess the ones who really chafe me are the people who claim to be MOH winners. It is so prevalent that an actual holder has made it his job to expose these frauds, which isn’t hard to do.

As to their motives I think you summarized it with your first sentence.

    • Please don’t get me started on Blumenthal. I live in CT and I am appalled that he is now a Senator. Misspoke? He LIED. L.I.E.D. And he was called on it many times during the campaign; the people of this state just can’t see beyond that big D after his name – and while it may stand for Democrat…I see it as Dumb-Ass.

A study was conducted some years ago about these types. I believe many of them went on to write and produce a programme called “Britain’s Got Talent”.
(I was killed in the war you know. A V1 hit me on the head).

    • Snake Eater

…I would have been more inclined to believe your story if you had been hit by a V-2. Best, Frank C.

Kris – I remember that race. But you see that voter behavior all the time.

I like the woman who was running against Blumenthal – in the wrestling industry? Seemed to have a lot of common sense.

Look at this woman who is running for the MA Senate seat – the “1/32nd Cherokee” – it’s obvious she stated that to get the Harvard job. And these are the people who want to lead us.

Hogday – I think those kind of people are everywhere!

    • When you speak of New England, at least politically, you have to picture a LIberal Wasteland – cuz that’s what it’s like. And again, don’t get me started on Elizabeth Warren. I have proveable Native American ethnicity – 1/8th to be exact – and I would NEVER use it to gain anything at all. First of all, like Warren I am blond, fair skinned with green eyes. People would laugh at me if I even tried – like people should have done with Warren. And she actually has ZERO Native American blood…everything she has said about her family and their stories has been proven to be a lie; and yet she continues spouting her pride in her Indian heritage. She dishonors those who legitimately claim that heritage and she dishonors the memories of Cherokees everywhere, particularly historically. For it has been PROVEN that one of her ancestors was in the Army and participated in the forced march of Cherokees knowns as the Trail of Tears.

They’re desperate for acceptance into a group.

Our family history (that is, tenth hand rumor and an old Bible) that I’m either 1:1024 or 1:2048 Indian, depending on whether you read the Bible as saying the ancestor “married a half-dead Injun” or “married a half-breed Injun”; when I asked if she was pregnant when she married people just shrugged. Mom always said I should put “Damn Yankee” on forms that asked for my ethnicity or ancestry. For a long time doing that got a laugh, regardless of the apparent group identity of the person reading the form. Now there’s a list to check from, spoiling Mom’s attempt to destroy the importance of it. The Marine Corps thinks I’m Swedish; that branch of my family was Norwegian. I still bleed green. Uniform and skin colors are not relevant. What you did — and do — is what counts.
