Some thoughts as I was reading this.
1. With the high winds you have to land it there – no alternate “airports” On the plus side I suppose was that they could angle he “runway” into the wind.
2. It was interesting to me about his turning base – the 90 degree turn just prior to turning another 90 degrees to final – Lex finding that he should turn base at the opposite end of the ship to the normal position – the wind was pushing him that much.
3. I wonder – if the COs give any thought to experience sending them out like that – the “nugget” – sink or swim – reminds me of he episode in Carrier where the weather is so terrible that one sailor remarked it was the worst he’d seen in 20 years.
The CO sends the pilots out for some “touch and gos” and the tanker is busy refueling pilots who are having trouble (which is pretty much most of the squadron),
The squadron commander decided to take the place of a new pilot saying “you will understand why in a minute”.
I wonder how many nuggets have been killed in those kind of training exercises.
